Wolves Sporting Director Matt Hobbs Charged with Misconduct
The Football Association (FA) charged Wolverhampton Wanderers sporting director, Matt Hobbs, with misconduct on Thursday, 25 October, following Wolves’ recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.
The charge centres on Hobbs’ behaviour towards match officials after John Stones’ controversial injury-time goal was allowed. Initially disallowed for Stones being offside, the goal was reinstated after a VAR review, which led to heated reactions from the Wolves camp.
Following the incident, Hobbs reportedly acted improperly and used abusive language towards officials in the tunnel. The FA statement noted that he has until Monday, 28 October, to respond to the allegations.
This is Hobbs’ second misconduct charge in less than a year. In November 2023, he received a one-match stadium suspension and a £4 000 fine for similar behaviour towards officials during Wolves’ 2-2 draw with Newcastle, where he disputed a contentious penalty decision.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is also under FA scrutiny after expressing concerns over potential unconscious bias in refereeing, suggesting officials might favour elite teams like Manchester City over others.
